Ebook About From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Inside of a Dog, an eye-opening, informative, “entertaining, and enlightening” (BookPage) celebration of the human-canine relationship for the curious dog owner and science-lover alike. We keep dogs and are kept by them. We love dogs and (we assume) we are loved by them. We buy them sweaters, toys, shoes; we are concerned with their social lives, their food, and their health. The story of humans and dogs is thousands of years old but is far from understood. In Our Dogs, Ourselves, Alexandra Horowitz explores all aspects of this unique and complex relationship that “dog lovers will savor and absorb” (Shelf Awareness). As Horowitz considers the current culture of dogdom, she reveals the odd, surprising, and contradictory ways we live with dogs. We celebrate their individuality but breed them for sameness. Despite our deep emotional relationships with dogs, legally they are property to be bought, sold, abandoned, or euthanized as we wish. Even the way we speak to our dogs is at once perplexing and delightful. In thirteen thoughtful and charming chapters, Our Dogs, Ourselves affirms our profound affection for this most charismatic of animals—and makes us “see canine companions in new ways” (Science News).Book Our Dogs, Ourselves: The Story of a Singular Bond Review :
The Pet Industry with the main driver being Dogs is now a 73 Billion Dollar a year industry, complete with Birthday Parties for Dogs, baby carriages for Dogs and much more as we humanize a four legged being so we can somehow feel better about ourselves. I started handling Dogs in the Military in Vietnam and then moved over to being a Handler in Law Enforcement spending allot of time work on Bomb Detection, Narcotics Detection and tracking, watching this furry four legged "partner" show me how much better they were and how they were actually family. All that time I knew they were a Dog, separate from people, their own view of the world and as already stated Special in their own way. That does not seem to be enough for all of these Phd's and behavior specialists with another Progressive approach telling us how bad we are as people even though at times that message is subliminal. No we do not need shock collars, pinch collars or beating down our dogs, but to disrespect them by hanging our so called qualities or needs on them and to follow information from people who for all intents and purposes treat them as lab rats to be studied in a lab, makes me wonder who actually has the negative approach. I knew what this book was going to be about when I bought it, I knew for me who routinely interacts with over 100 dogs a day in a boarding and training environment, it would be difficult to get through, but as I am from a generation that strongly believes in studying all opinions and perspectives I actually read the book cover to cover twice. It's a best seller, wonderful for the author but bad for Dogs. This book does not describe the amazing partnership of dog with man over the millennia nor the dog’s superior senses of hearing and smell and overwheling love for us humans on which it is based. The only mention of “ears” i could find in the index referred to the practice of cropping them, of which the author disapproves. No mention of “nose” or “smell” at all. Plenty of trivia about unjust laws and treatment of all animals, the cutesy-poo baby talk people tend to use with dogs, popular doggie names, etc. etc. The promotional endorsement by Ed Yont might lead one to believe that the research and writing for this book is of a quality similar to his “I Am Multitudes.” Not even close.
